Cruel World

Baby number four is adorable and we feel blessed to have her. But she is demanding in the daytime and likes to kick and party in the wee hours of the night. She is over six months old now and I don't remember what it is like to feel anything besides pure exhaustion. The last few weeks have been particularly busy, with a family trip to Utah for Spring Break and then to Chicago and Milwaukee while Vince attended a conference. Fun times, but tiring too. So, I haven't felt well and decided yesterday that baby Audrey needs to sleep in her crib and I need to experience at least five hours of continuous sleep. All of our kids have been co-sleepers for their first year, but I am getting older and we have hauled this crib around through about 6 moves, and it has hardly been used.

So, we do the nighttime routine - give her a little rice cereal, a nice warm bath, nurse her, rock her to sleep and put her in the crib at about 8pm. She wakes up and cries a few times and Vince walks with her, lulls her with the bathroom fan that she loves, and puts her back in her crib. I take the 1 am. cry. I feed her and put her back in her crib sound asleep which lasts a whole 5 minutes. Then Vince takes over again, puts Sophie in our bed and gets in Sophie's bed, near Audrey's crib, so he can close the door and have the room quiet and dark (Sophie likes the door open with the hall light on). So, from here Audrey sleeps until 7:30am.! This could have been magical.

But no, Landon comes into my room at around 2am. He had a nightmare. He wants to get in between Sophie and me. This never happens. I let him in, forgetting that he is a wild sleeper and a terrible bed hog. I spend the rest of the night with my usual six inches of our queen-sized bed. Then I notice at about 4:30 that William has slipped in at the foot of the bed at some point. Waaah.

But I am hopeful that Audrey slept 6 hours in her crib last night and maybe just maybe, before the month in through, I will greet the morning after a long and greedy six hours myself. I get giddy just thinking about it.

First of all....LOVE THE BLOG...it looks great! Finally you are in the loop. If we can just get Karen to get with the program and get past her title:) Your kids are so cute. I love Audrey's eyes....too beautiful! I can't believe how big everyone is getting. Sophie was such a little toddler last time I saw here and the boys are so handsome. We have to get together with everyone and their kids when you come out. Can't wait!!!!

Oh, what sleep deprivation does to a Mom! I feel for ya. I was told by my three older sisters and my Pediatrician (and it worked with all my three kids) that it just takes a few nights of letting them cry it out. What my Dr. told me was (because night feedings are only for comfort after 6 months) to let them cry 5-10 minutes then check on them WITHOUT picking them up. I usually rubbed their back or gave them a binki but never made eye contact and stayed only a MINUTE to let them know I was still in the house(lol) and I did this for two hours straight the first night. After this went on for a few hours I would give them some Baby Tylenol because if I was screaming for two hours I think my head would hurt also. They would wake up through out the night a few times and I would do this same routine..not picking them up though. It would take only two to three days and then they were sleeping through the night (and each night got better). I always arranged the "Three Days" knowing I would be really sleep deprived so Mark could help in the morning. Anyway...It works! We also (and still do) in each bedroom, have a LOUD fan by their beds so little noises don't wake up the kids.

Sorry about the long paragraph! Good Luck...YOU CAN DO IT! Use that crib:)

Hey Lulu,
Fur Cute! Wow I think this is the first picture I seen of Audrey since the newborn pictures you sent me. She is adorable! All of your kids are! It sounds like you definitley have your hands full! Hey, when I checked out your blog it actually inspired me to make my own. I have never done the blog thing either. So last night I sat confused in front of the computer for quite a while to see if I could figure it out. It is still "under construction", but I have started a blog spot or what ever you call it. I already got a hello from Austin. I am not sure how you look for people yet but I am working on it. So stop in and say hello sometime. I miss you, and for some reason cant seem to catch up with you these days. Should I take a hint?
Love ya, Nina

Great Blog...thanks for keeping us in the loop. We can't wait to see you all at the reunion. As for the kids sleeping, I am with Amanda lee, it only takes a few nights of them crying themselves to sleep and then they sleep all night. Haven't you ever heard me say 'I had good babies' it's because they were good, they slept all night long and usually never woke up but maybe once from 6 months to a year and a binki usually put them right back to sleep. You can do it! Love Charity
